The Illinois Historic Preservation Agency operates over 60 historic
sites and memorials. The Agency also administers the Abraham Lincoln Presidential
Library and Museum. The library is the state’s
chief historical and genealogical research facility
that is home to the state’s world-renowned Abraham
Lincoln collection. The library houses the Agency's
collection of more than 12 million items of Illinois
history. The museum combines scholarship and showmanship
to communicate the amazing life and times of Abraham
Lincoln in unforgettable ways and features many of
our Lincoln artifacts as well as two main theaters.
We administer all state and federal historic preservation
and incentive programs in Illinois, including the

Race: A History Beyond Black and White at Vachel Lindsay Home February 11
Will also speak at Springfield area schools
The nationally renowned author of Race: A History Beyond Black and White will present a program at 6 p.m. Thursday, February 11 at the Vachel Lindsay Home State Historic Site, 603 S. Fifth Street, Springfield. The program, being held in observance of Lincoln’s Birthday and African American History Month, is free and open to the public.
Author and historian Dr. Marc Aronson will discuss his book, Race: A History Beyond Black and White, which he will be sharing with area high school students. He will also discuss the art of nonfiction - how to tell the truth in a time of constantly changing information, media storms, and the pressure to fictionalize.
Aronson earned his doctorate in American History at New York University and has made his career writing and editing nonfiction for smart teenagers. His books have won many prizes, including the first ever Robert Sibert Medal from the American Library Association for excellence in nonfiction for young readers.

The King V. Hostick Award Competition for 2010-2011
The Illinois Historic Preservation Agency and the Illinois State Historical Society invite applications for the 2010-2011 King V. Hostick Award. The award was established by the late manuscript dealer, King V. Hostick, to provide financial assistance to graduate students in history and library science writing dissertations dealing with Illinois. Stipends are individually determined up to $3,000. Preference may be given to research conducted at the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum (formerly the Illinois State Historical Library). All applications must be received by March 12, 2010 either by United States mail or as an electronic file. Award decisions will me made by June, 2010 and awards distributed by July, 2010.

Lincoln Log Cabin open on Lincoln’s Birthday

Lincoln Log Cabin State Historic Site near Charleston will be open on Friday, February 12 from 9 a.m. until 4 p.m. in honor of Abraham Lincoln’s birthday. Volunteers at the site will be engaged in typical daily activities representing 19th century life on the Illinois prairie. Visitors may see activities centered on the hearth including cooking the noon day meal and candle dipping.
